Francesca Giovanetti is a Medical Doctor and Founder’s Associate at Syntropic Medical. She grew up in a small town in the Italian Alps, near the Austrian border. It was in the mountains that her insatiable spirit of adventure, a drive for continuous challenges, and a knack for thriving with only the essentials were forged.
Her fascination with the human body—how it functions and sometimes fails—led her to study Medicine at the University of Padua. However, during the clinical years, while juggling responsibilities between the hospital and conferences, Francesca discovered a deep passion for healthcare innovation. “I began participating in hackathons, start-up events, and international competitions” – she explains. “Through these experiences, I discovered how to leverage my medical background to become the crucial link between clinical settings and innovation”.
What inspired you to leave the well-known clinical wards and embrace the uncertainty of the start-up life?
In my clinical experience, I’ve had the opportunity to work as a physician in low-resource contexts, across India and Africa. There, I came to realise the immense privilege we enjoy in Europe—the privilege to take risks. We have the freedom to truly choose our paths, to venture into the unknown, and to try to build something new. We can afford the risk of failure because, at the very worst, we could always humbly return home to our parents or friends and still have a roof over our head, the support of loved ones, a functioning healthcare system, access to safe food and water, qualitative education, and the chance to start again.
Most people in this world don’t have the luxury of taking such risks.
If someone like me, who benefits from these social safety nets, doesn’t take that leap, then who will?
Francesca obtained her medical licence and immediately joined a venture capital fund that invests in healthcare technologies, to gain a comprehensive understanding of the start-up landscape and the factors behind successful businesses.
With this unique insight, her next step became clear: getting to work behind the scenes of a promising start-up alongside a visionary founder, gaining hands-on experience in as many areas as possible.
She then joined the Syntropic team because she wanted to work on a genuine scientific discovery with concrete potential, and help bring it into the hands of patients.
At Syntropic Francesca works closely with the CEO, supporting business development and overseeing general operations in the daily running of the company.
Additionally, she leverages her medical background to assist in the design and execution of clinical studies and to build networks with various stakeholders.
