“I wanted to demonstrate that it’s possible to build a company the right way — one where people genuinely enjoy their work, even in roles they might not have considered, and where there is strong support for collaboration with other companies”.

Mark Caffrey, CEO of Syntropic Medical, has a clear vision for innovation. After experiencing the fulfilment of developing innovative technologies at the Translational Medical Device Lab at the University of Galway, Ireland, he quickly realised the next step for scaling this impact was to establish startups, and build a dedicated team. However, in the competitive business world, where some may prioritise goals of personal success and fame, Mark emphasises how crucial it is to create companies with meaningful missions. “At Syntropic Medical, the focus is on healthcare, aiming to make a genuine difference in people’s lives”, he underlines. “Passion has to be aligned with contribution”.

Mark Caffrey has a wealth of expertise that spans the whole medical device industry, from designing and prototyping a completely new technology to developing brain-computer-interfaces.

Given his core technology background, Mark has brought a unique fresh perspective to his new CEO role.

“My technical background, especially in research-intensive roles, enables me to quickly understand complex scientific concepts and communicate them effectively to patients, doctors and investors”.

Moreover, having an outsider perspective to the business field has provided Syntropic with an immensely valuable approach. The success of the startup has been significantly enhanced by the presence of knowledgeable experts. “When we face challenges, we seek help rather than assume we have all the answers” , explains Mark. “Embracing learning and constructive criticism has been crucial, allowing us to leverage expert support effectively.”

How do you convince high-achieving employees and advisors to get onboard?
